While at BlogHer I spotted “The Blogging Church” and mentioned it to Pastor Brent of the Well. Pastor Brent read the book in only a few days and then lent it to me. I’m only through the first couple of chapters, but I came across a couple of quotes that speak to heart of why I enjoy blogging.
“Blogging is about connecting communities through conversation.”
“Blogging is simply online hospitality – opening your door, inviting people inside, and sharing stories.”
For several months I’ve been struggling with my personal blog because I feel like I’ve lost the voice that was evolving here, but I’ve been excited to see a stronger community/connection develop. BlogHer inspired me to search again for that voice and become a creative hostess. I’m thrashing out ideas on how to make that happen as I realize how easily technology & social networking are mixing with my other interests.

I’m ready to start the ladies only book club! The selection is Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat Pray Love. The book is split into 3 smaller books, with each of the smaller books containing the author’s story of her visits to Italy, India, and Indonesia. I’m proposing that we gather after completing each smaller book. At these gatherings we shall have food and drink from each country! I’m pretty excited that Italy is the first book, I’m already looking forward to an Italian dinner with delicious wine! If you are interested, let me know, and we can start to plan a date for the first dinner.

Life
Today I’ve spent some time catching up on the news and NPR shows I missed while in Narrows last week. While listening to Wait, Wait…..Don’t Tell Me, I heard a question about man-eating badgers being released in Iraq by the British. This caught my attention for a number of reasons (as I’m sure it has caught yours), but mainly because I have a brother-in-law who enjoys stories about badgers. I quickly Googled “man eating badgers” and found a good story from the BBC. I’m going to tease you with a couple of quotes from the story.
First, from a woman who was attacked by one of the beasts.
“My husband hurried to shoot it but it was as swift as a deer,” she said. “It is the size of a dog but his head is like a monkey,”
Next from the UK military spokesman, Major Mike Shearer:
“We can categorically state that we have not released man-eating badgers into the area.”
My head is full of endless jokes right now.

Life
I’ve never been in a book club before, but have always wanted to. I’ve begged Dan for years for us to host a book club and he always says no. After years of rejection I’ve finally realized that I can be in a book club without Dan. And to rub it in his face even a little bit more, I want it to be girls only. Then he won’t even be allowed to come! Ha!
So, any girls out there who want to read a good summer book or two and then get together with other girls and drink wine while we talk about the book, please let me know.

Though it is a cool 70 degrees outside, I’m curious to know what hot books everyone has planned to read this summer?
This summer I will spend most of my reading time with deceased, brilliant women. I have started, but not regularly read, A House with Four Rooms by Rumer Godden. Also, I picked up a Virginia Woolf novel last week that I am looking forward to reading because it is her first published novel. And because she is my obsession I will surely read lots of Sylvia Plath this summer.

I spent the better part of last week taking in the wisdom of Anne Lamott. It is only recently that I’ve even heard of Anne, but everything I read about her writing placed her on my “must read” list. So, I went to the library and picked up Bird by Bird, her book on the writing life, and Traveling Mercies on tape. I quickly read Bird by Bird, which was so wonderful for me to go through, it helped me gain more understanding about my own writing.
I devoured Traveling Mercies in a day! I loved hearing her stories, they are so real, not sugar-coated. She has a great way of telling a story about life including the pain, hurt, confusion, humor, and God. I liked it so much that I wanted more and went back to the library to get Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith which is similar to Traveling Mercies in that it is a collection of stories about life and faith. I really recommend going to the library and getting these books on tape because Anne is the narrator, its was like she was sitting in my living room telling me about her journey. I was very encouraged by her stories as I realized, once again, I am not alone.

Life
If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.
~ Emily Dickinson
This is all I can think about right now. Let this be my mantra.
