Eating in the raw

Posted by alicia on Jan 20, 2009 in Life |

Like many of you, I celebrated the holidays by eating too much, staying up too late, enjoying too many homemade snacks, drinking too much and taking daily naps.  It was too good.

But, then I had to come back home and face reality. Sleepless nights, lazy days, inability to focus and the occasional shakes, it felt like I was going through withdraw.

To give myself a swift kick in the rear, I started a “mostly” raw diet. And, it has been amazing! My energy is up and my mind is clear! My daily headaches are gone. I feel incredible, and have no doubt that I will develop some sort of superhuman power in the next week.

I’ve tried raw before, and failed. But, I will not fail again! I planned for success. First, I’m doing mostly raw. I get 1 non-raw meal or snack a day, which is usually bread, with a side of bread and bread on top. Second, I knew I had to get some decent recipes that didn’t involve using ingredients I’d never heard of, or kitchen equipment I don’t own. My MIL (aka, Goddess of Raw), gave me a book that has been my lifesaver. I’ve found a few quick-n-easy recipes that I’ve actually enjoyed, and surprisingly keep me satisfied.

I’m having such a good experience eating mostly raw, that I’m getting excited to plan and plant a larger garden this year!

I went through a raw phase and wish I could go back. It felt amazing. I’ve got loads of “un-cookbooks” if you care to borrow any of’em. Heck, if you two came by, I’d break out the dehydrator and the juicer for the occasion.

daily headaches gone? dude. i need to plan this out…and i already am in the midst of planning a large garden. ;) (and i can help you with seed, as i’m the queen of seed.)

i would love to have a headache-free day. wow. i’m giddy at the thought…i just hesitate always because i am not a natural-born cook. (i grow things, but look at most kitchen equipment as if it were something from Roswell.)

Jason, That sounds wonderful! As of now, I’m only using my blender. Once I master it, maybe I’ll pull out my juicer…and someday I might dare to get a dehydrator!

Lynne – I’m not a natural-born cook either. That’s why raw works…no “cooking”. ;-) Just throw things in a blender and *poof*, you too can have a strange, green soup.

OOOhhh, I’m a lover of all things carb-y and cheese-y, but you are making some good arguments here, lady. And the cookbook is key?

Yes, the cookbook is a necessity. I just find a recipe that looks good (or fits with what fruits & veggies I have), and after a few minutes of chopping or blending, I have dinner! Without it I’d be eating bananas and baby carrots all day long.

My inspiration for trying raw is my mother-in-law, you can check out her blog here: http://simplepilgrimage.org/donna/.

Looks like she’s back in the raw groove!!! She will be a great resource on what to try, and what to avoid…like zucchini hummus. :-/
